I AM The Good Shepherd Jn 10:11-14

- Gen 4:4 reads "And the Lord had respect unto Abel." The first mention of respect in the Bible.

It is good to be a shepherd; to care for a flock.

- A good shepherd embodies faithfulness, compassion, guidance and protection. I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

- A good shepherd treasures the innocence of a lamb and cares for it. I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

- A good shepherd knows that sheep will stray and require direction and leadership. I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

- A good shepherd walks before his flock, leading by his voice. I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

- A good shepherd leads the mothers to and from the pasturage and carries the tender lambs in his arms. I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

- A good shepherd sleeps in the field near his sheep in fair weather and leads them to drink when they thirst. He helps those that are lame and uses his crook to rescue them from dangerous places. I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

- A good shepherd individually names his flock and causes them to recognize his voice and respond to his call. I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

- A good shepherd separates his sheep from the goats. I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

- A good shepherd exposes himself to danger and protects against robbers and wolves. A hireling works for money and may quit or flee when trouble comes. I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

- A good shepherd can triumph in battle with a mere slingshot. He will lay down his life. I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

-The GOOD SHEPHERD must become a Lamb Himself and thereby be called The GREAT SHEPHERD Who will rise from the dead to care for His sheep.

- The GREAT SHEPHERD will become The CHIEF SHEPHERD when He comes again to lead His sheep to the eternal pasture.

It is good to be a shepherd; to care for a flock. (To JOHN)

What Is A Minister?

Somewhere between the call of God and the sick ward of the local hospital there exists a specialist in everything, variously called a "minister," a "preacher", a "pastor" or a "clergyman."

He is a hero to his wife, a fine boy to his mother, an "easy touch" to down-and-outers, a name on the mailing list of hundreds of agencies and organizations, an example to his flock.

To some people he's a fuddy-duddy, to some he's a stuffed shirt, to some he's a character who has never lived it up, to some he's "Reverend", to some he's a guy who has nothing else to do but get ready for a twenty-minute sermon once a week.

To some he's the person in whose presence you must not cuss, drink, or smoke.

To others he is a dear friend, a "Johnny-on-the spot" when death's  angel hovers near; he's the one whose ministry continues when a loved one dies; he's the man who can mend marriages, but who can't find time to fix his wife's toaster; he's the nice man at church who pats the babies' heads, even though he's not running for a political office.

He's the one who marries young lovers, prays with the sick, and buries the dead.

He's a financial expert, a public orator, janitor, errand boy, typist, file clerk, writer, public relations expert, poor golfer, professional tea-sipper and punch-drinker, journalist, reformer, evangelist, pastor, business executive, counselor, prophet, bookworm, diplomat, human being, bass, tenor, planner, teetotaler, and usually a terrible golfer!

Ministers are found everywhere -- preaching in church, listening in meetings, teaching a class, looking at a clock, not looking at a clock, giving invocations, giving benedictions, waiting in maternity wards, sympathizing beside caskets, standing behind pulpits, pleading causes, serving on committees, studying the Bible, playing football with the kids on the vacant lot near the church, watching someone take a final breath, sitting behind a desk, lying underneath a car, standing on the roof of buildings under construction, meditating, dreaming, at home at dinner time, not at home at dinner time, standing before women's groups, delivering addresses, meeting in conventions, diagnosing the world's sickness and prescribing the cure - Jesus.

The Pastor's Plight

The pastor of a church is in a precarious position; he can't please everyone! It has been said:

If he is young, he lacks experience; if his hair is grey, he's too old for the young people.

If he has several children, he has too many; if he has no children, he's setting a bad example.

If he preaches from his notes, he has canned sermons and is too dry; if he doesn't use notes, he has not studied and is not deep.

If he is attentive to the poor people in the church, they claim he is playing to the grandstand; if he pays attention to the wealthy, he is trying to be an aristocrat.

If he suggests changes for improvement of the church, he is a dictator; if he makes no suggestions, he is a figurehead.

If he uses too many illustrations, he neglects the Bible; if he doesn't use enough illustrations, he isn't clear.

If he condemns wrong, he is cranky; if he doesn't preach against sin, he's a compromiser.

If he fails to please somebody, he's hurting the church and ought to leave; if he tries to please everyone, he is a fool.

If he preaches about money, he's a money grabber; if he doesn't preach spiritual giving, he is failing to develop the people.

If he drives an old car, he shames his congregation; if he drives a new car, he is setting his affection on earthly things.

If he preaches all the time, the people get tired of hearing one man; if he invites guest speakers, he is shirking his responsibility.

If he receives a large salary, he's mercenary; if he receives only a small salary, well-it proves he isn't worth much anyway.
